This week in AP lit we talked a lot about tragedy. Tragedy is a drama based on human suffering. During the week we did a play called Oedipus Rex. The play was about a hero who was helping a small town by trying to find the king's murderer. In the end of the story the truth came out that Oedipus was the king's murderer who was also his father and that Oedipus married his mother. Another thing we did was we watched a couple of ted talk videos that had something to do with tragedy. During the time we took learning about tragedy I learned more that what I expected to learn. I never thought that tragedy could mean so much and all the different elements, characteristics and signs of tragedy. The ted talks for me really opened my mind up to think of tragedy different, for example there was one ted talk that talked about whether or not we have control over our decisions. Although the ted talk never really discussed tragedy itself, it did make me think that the choices we make are not always the choices we make and sometimes in many different cases it's sometimes fate making that choice for us.

It's the seventh week of school and that means a new marking period. I'm doing good so far except for one of my classes. Every week in AP lit we read and I enjoy getting the time to read during class, I changed my book for the author study project we will be doing later on in the trimester and I am actually enjoying it so far. This week was a little stressful. We started writing our essays for the what is lit. project and it's going but for me it's just harder being in a group while having to write an essay because everyone has their own ideas but not everyone likes the same idea. For most of the week we pretty much did the same thing everyday, we would hear a poem, read or write and then work on our projects so it wasn't too busy of a week. If we work on another project like this I think I will consider doing it by myself, only because I seems easier when you don't have to worry about other opinions in the group. Every week is a new week and I always think I couldn't possibly learn more about poetry that what I already know but that is not true. I learned that poems can be to the point where opposite interpretations can be correct. This week we focused more on getting into our groups and working on our projects. Some of the things we did within our groups was learning to analyze different elements. This week we also had a speaker come in and talk to us about writing and about his book. Things that the speaker had pointed out was that not everyone is going to like what you write and that's okay and he also said that criticism is a good thing but just because I few people criticize it doesn't mean everyone hates it. At the end of the week we started working on our creative writing portfolio's and while writing the portfolio we were to revise and edit our work that we wanted to put in it. Revising not only fixes the writing but it also helps me as a writing to learn what I need to know. Overall this week was really helpful with my writing skills and no matter what writing takes time and dedication. For next week something I can improve on is probably my creative writing. A lot of the time when we are doing creative writing I'm not really sure what to write about. This week was a pretty eventful week with it being homecoming this weekend. Spirit week was festive as usual and AP lit was as interesting as usual. This week we really started getting into our groups and reading a bunch of short stories. One of the things I really enjoyed this week was listening to the different poems by the poet Ross Gay. In our groups we had to choose three short stories to read and I chose to read The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe, it was a really interesting story and we had to find symbolism in it. Earlier in the week we wrote an "I remember" prompt for our creative writing and then a few days later we went back to that prompt and either added on to it or changed it. Going back to that prompt I picked something that was really personal for me and it made me feel good to be able to write about it in the way I wanted to. Looking in to the lesson plans for next week it seems pretty busy and it looks like we are going to get into the What is literature project. Overall this week was a pretty good week, I know that next week we are changing the poem the day to a different author but I do think that we should listen to more of Ross Gay and any other poems he has. This week was a pretty good week in AP Lit. Being in this class has help me so much with my reading and writing skills. My reading skills could definitely be better the problem I have with reading is that I get too distracted and I don't like reading on my own time, I understand I do need to start reading on my own time to start reaching my reading goal on time in class. This week we learned how to look at a piece of art a create a story from it. I was really interested in this because everyone makes up stories and just about everyone is good at it. When we watch the ted talk about the women who made stories up about painting I was really intrigued with how she came up with the stories and she didn't know anything about them to begin with. One of the paintings I really liked was the Girl with the pearl earring. Looking into next week I'm kind of excited because we are getting a new poem of the week and we are going to start getting into our groups for our literature projects. Well it's the 3rd week of school and us seniors have already ordered caps and gowns. I applied for MMCC but I haven't thought about where I'm going to go after that yet, I'm mostly just trying to get through the day. The main focus this week in AP literature was having a deeper understanding of literature. This weeks activity was actually quite useful for me in understanding it differently and more deeper. During the activity we had draw a picture of a metaphor that was based on a chapter in How to read literature like a professor, this activity really helped me understanding different chapters in literature. A lot of the chapters that were chosen to be drawn were ones that I thought I knew but I guess I didn't really know much about them. Something that I am nervous about in this class is writing, I am a really bad writer and looking into week fours lesson plans most of it is writing. The TP-CASTT did help me when analyzing a poem but I think the thing I struggle with most in writing is getting it started. I'm taking this class not only for college credit but to also help me advance in my reading and writing skills. It's the second week of school and it's just reminding me how much closer I am to actually graduating and moving on with the rest of my life. I love the thought of graduating and being on my own when I leave for college but I also fear that I'll make mistakes somewhere on my journey and it'll impact my life in ways I can't imagine. I will admit though, I have different opinions about school. I love coming to different classes and learning new things and I also love seeing my friends that I haven't seen in awhile. But school can be very stressful sometimes especially for the students who have a lot going on at home, work or even with homework. This week in AP literature I learned to better understand poetry and even respect it more than I did before. Something that we learned this week that has really helped me to better understand poetry was the TP-CASTT. I really didn't know much about poetry, at first I would just read the poem and think Okay the author is telling us exactly what he wants us to know, but after breaking down and analyzing the poem "The Eagle" I realized that even a poem that's only two sentences can really make your mind think about all the things that the author could be implying. I'm really enjoying myself in this class, this is the first AP class that I've ever taken so I was a bit worried and honestly I still kind of am. This is only the second week of being in this class and I definitely believe it's going to help me in the future, not only by helping me become a better writer but by helping me with my reading and opening up my mind with different possibilities that could happen in any story. The first week of school went pretty good. I was really worried about taking an AP class especially in literature. I was nervous because ever since I was a little kid I was always a slow reader and I would struggle with understanding a few words. In AP lit we had a pretty easy start but I do expect it to get harder or more challenging as the year goes on. Already I have found a book that I am interested in and I have learned a lot more about reading, writing and critical thinking. There’s not a lot of people I know personally in my class but there are a few. I think that having a class with a lot of my friends is a pain in the butt for me because I always get distracted easily by them so I am lucky that I barely know anyone. For me something important I learned was the reading rate. The reading rate is something that is probably going to stick with me all throughout my life because there are going to be times in college and when I am older where I can use the knowledge of the reading rate to get books read on time. Another thing I like about AP lit is that it’s okay if you’re a slow reader or if you’re not that creative it just means that you have to try harder to succeed. |
